Where possible always follow manufactures instructions.
Avoid wearing Dance shoes to and from class, they are designed to be worn on specific dance flooring.
Always allow shoes to dry after use, ideally in a warm location with air circulation. Keep away from moisture, direct heat and sunlight, NEVER put dance shoes in a clothes dryer.
 
Ballet Shoes
(Flats, Slippers, Pumps)
After use allow ballet shoes to air dry away from direct heat and sunlight. Never use a clothes dryer.
If shoes develop a odour sprinkle some backing soda inside the shoes, leave overnight, and then shake the shoes out.   
 
Leather Ballet Shoes:
Regularly clean leather ballet shoes to keep them looking their best.
  • Wipe shoes with a soft damp cloth, use a little warm water and gentle detergent, (do not use harsh cleaners). Dry completely with a dry cloth.
  • Apply a cream polish in a matching colour and buff with a clean cloth.
  • If shoes have become badly scuffed they can be painted, follow manufactures instructions to do this.   
  • Regularly brush the suede soles to remove a build-up of dirt and rosin (used on dance floors), if the soles become smooth and slippery gently rub the sole with fine grade sandpaper.  
  • Never immerse leather ballet shoes in water or wash in the washing machine.
 
Canvas Ballet Shoes:
Only wash canvas ballet shoes in a washing machine if the manufacture recommends this. If in doubt use the hand wash method.
 
Washing machine:
  • Place ballet shoes in a lingerie washing bag
  • Use a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild laundry detergent that contains NO fabric softeners or bleach.
  • Remove before the spin cycle and drip dry on a towel in a warm dry location away from moisture, direct heat and sunlight. Never place in a clothes dryer.
  • Optional;  When they are still slightly damp wear the ballet shoes so they finish drying and re-conform to the shape of your foot.
Hand Wash:
  • Fill a basin with cold water and add a mild hand washing detergent that contains NO fabric softeners or bleach.  
  • Immerse the canvas ballet shoes into the water and gently pat them to help saturate the shoes with the soapy water. Leave to soak for 10  minutes.
  • To lift the dirt from the canvas gently squeeze the soapy water through them.
  • To Rinse; drain and re-fill the basin with cold water, immerse the shoes , gently squeeze the water through them. Repeat this step until the water stays sudd free.
  • Remove from the water, do not wring them, gently squeeze excess water and drip dry on a towel in a warm dry location away from moisture, direct heat and sunlight.
  • Never place canvas ballet shoes in a clothes dryer.
  • Optional;  When they are still slightly damp wear the ballet shoes so they finish drying and re-conform to the shape of your foot.

Jazz Shoes

After use allow Jazz shoes to air dry away from direct heat and sunlight. Never use a clothes dryer.
If shoes develop a odour sprinkle some backing soda inside the shoes, leave overnight, and then shake the shoes out.   
 
Leather Jazz Shoes:
Regularly clean leather Jazz Shoes to keep them looking their best.
  • If shoes have laces, remove them before cleaning.
  • Elastic inserts can be spot cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Allow to air dry in a warm dry location away from direct heat.
  • Wipe shoes with a soft damp cloth, use a little warm water and gentle detergent, (do not use harsh cleaners). Dry completely with a dry cloth.
  • Apply a cream polish in a matching colour and buff with a clean cloth.
  • If shoes have become badly scuffed they can be painted, follow manufactures instructions to do this.   
  • Keep toe nails trim and filed smooth to help prevent premature wear of the leather around the toe area. A small hole may be repaired at a shoe repairer. 
  • Never immerse leather Jazz shoes in water or wash in the washing machine.
